![]() Since it's mostly left hand technique that will dictate your speed, the only way to get faster is to practice slowly. Keep with this philosophy of starting out very slowly with a metronome for four string sweeps, and if you're anything like me, you'll be comfortable and well accustomed to the motion of it before you even get to practice five and six string sweeps. You want to be sure you're hitting every note though. What is Sweep Picking The sweep picking technique (also called economy picking) can be referred to as shredding, but it is not limited to metal genres. The mistakes you'll typically make sweeping aren't often very easy to hear on a clean sound, but are obvious on distortion. I practiced this by using a Fretwrap to mute the strings, then playing the notes with only my left hand (no picking) until I was able to play all of the notes clearly. When it's perfect clean, practice it again (from a slow speed of course), with your distortion until that's clean, too. Sweep picking is cool because every note of the arpeggio is clear and clean, and not muddled up by any other notes. This is how you transform into a sweep picking master and impress all your friends. Practice integrating the ideas from this article in unpredictable ways. But in fact, sweep-picking was pioneered back in the 1950s by jazz guitar greats like Les Paul, Tal Farlow, Johnny Smith and Barney Kessel, who used the technique. Practice clean first to make sure you're hitting every note. Using any one idea too often sounds boring after awhile (no matter how cool it is). Many sweep-happy rock and metal electric guitar players use the technique primarily with triadic (root-third-fifth) arpeggios, such as straight major and minor, stacked in octaves. The great thing about sweeps is that you can throw a load of them together in the same key as part of a practice exercise, and it still sounds great. It will be awkward at first, and you will feel like you suck, but that will change very soon. Eventually, around 80bpm or so (if you're doing your sweeps as 16th notes), you'll find yourself unable to effectively pick the shape without the motion becoming a smooth, continuous motion. ![]() At slow speeds it really won't feel like sweeping at all but just do it anyway. I found two strings to be more awkward to do in fact, but the time it takes to get those right is totally worth it.
